@ Stephanie: In some ways, I think it's good to have a male-headed company make the business case for having more women at the top. It shows support without seeming self-serving. And broad support for these ideas is crucial.

Interestingly, I've read some research from Spain showing that hiring committees with more women on them ended up hiring less women for the jobs than committees where men were the majority. I'll have to look for the links to post here, but the point is that having women at the top doesn't automatically result in enhanced opportunities for women in the particular organization.

[quote]"McKinsey & Company is probably the largest and best-known professional services firm that is calling attention to the shortage of women in leadership positions in America’s businesses. Their reports, Women Matter and Women Matter 2, demonstrate some important relationships between the presence of women in corporate leadership roles and the financial performance of organizations and explore why that may be the case. This is a good start, but more work needs to be done."[quote/]

I find it quite telling and a bit ironic that the managing director of this company is male. Par for the course.

It's easier to get people rallied up in places where the discrimination is obvious. When I'm told that I can't go into a building or take out a loan because I'm female it's easy to see injustice, but when I'm told that I can do whatever I want but I *choose* to earn low wages so I can take care of my kids, the injustice is harder to see.

I received an e-mail from my daughter this morning who works in a city of 250,000 in the Congo. She told me she had marched for International Women's Day with thousands of women. What do we need to do here to get thousands of both women and men into the streets to say something is wrong with this continued discrimination?
